How To Fix A Clogged Toilet in 3 Easy Steps

Posted on January 3rd, 2018 by BlueMountain

Our bathrooms are one of the most used rooms in our homes — which isn’t surprising if you know that we spend an average of 30 minutes a day there! All that time can eventually lead to some plumbing issues, including a clogged toilet. When this occurs, there are a few things you can do:

| Plumber Staunton | Waynesboro Plumbing

Use a Plunger

Go and grab your handy dandy plunger — about 90% of all clogged toilets can be fixed with one! When you plunge your toilet, you loosen and dislodge any obstructions in the piping system. Hopefully after a few times, your toilet will be able to flush again.

Snake the Toilet

First, unwind three to four feet of cable and place the snake into the toilet bowl. Next, turn the snake handle in a clockwise motion until you feel it begin to bind. As you rotate, the snake should find its way into the drain pipe without you forcing down. When the snake comes into contact with the clog, you will feel resistance – wind the snake back when this happens. If you pull some debris out, the clog will also likely begin to break apart.

Call a Plumber

When in doubt or if your plunger or plumbing snake isn’t working, call your local plumber to fix the problem. Sometimes it’s just a matter of expertise and the right tools, which all professional and licensed plumbers have. We also suggest calling your plumber for a regular scheduled maintenance. In doing so, you can prevent costly repairs down the road or clogs at the worst of times.
