Do you often hear people say that you woke up on the wrong side of the bed? While there may some truth to that statement, there are other reasons as to why you tend to wake up feeling groggy. Here are five things in your bedroom that are making you sick and overall not well-rested from the night before.
1. Your pillow. After a long hard day, we know the first thing you want to do is lay your head on your pillow and relax. Unfortunately, pillows can quickly build up an excessive amount of dust mites, bacteria, and mold — leading to allergy symptoms such as a sore throat, headaches, and congestion.
2. Houseplants. It’s true what they say about plants helping improve your indoor air quality. However, if you overwater them, your plants will rot and mold will spread. Only water houseplants when the top of the soil is dry. Also, NEVER leave them sitting in a tray of water!
3. Candles. While candles may look and smell nice, you risk the chance of some serious side effects. Scented candles release harmful toxins into the air, which can irritate and harm your health. Minimize this risk by burning beeswax or soy candles instead!
4. Cleaning products. We’re not saying don’t clean your bedroom, but when you do, make sure you’re only using eco-friendly products — you can even make your own with products found in your home!
5. Your windows. If you keep your bedrooms windows shut, you’re sealing in a wide range of pollutants. When the weather permits, try opening your windows a crack to circulate the air in your room.
