Water Saving Tips

Posted on March 9th, 2017 by BlueMountain

The average American family uses around 100 gallons of water per day at home. And although water covers 70 percent of Earth’s surface, less than one percent is available for human use. So how can we control our intake and waste?

The Kitchen
 – Don’t run the tap. When you wash the dishes, fill the sink with water rather than continuously running the tap.
 – Cut back on using your garbage disposal. They require a high amount of water to operate. Instead, start a compost pile as an alternate method to dispose of food waste.

The Bathroom
 – Take shorter showers. If you reduce your shower time from 15 minutes to 10 minutes, you’ll end up saving 12 gallons of water per minute.
 – Fix your leaks. A showerhead leaking at 10 drips per minute wastes more than 500 gallons of water per year. That’s the amount needed to take more than 180 showers!
 – Turn off your faucets. When it’s time to brush your teeth, wash your face, or shave, don’t forget to turn off the water!

The Laundry Room
 – Always wash full loads. Also, make sure to adjust the water level in the washer to the amount needed for the load.
– Choose a high-efficiency washer machine. When it’s time to replace your washer, look for Energy Star models with the lowest water factor available for the highest water savings.
