Although we’re still well above 80 degrees, you can smell autumn in the air which means it’s almost time to switch from AC to heat. So what do you do with your AC unit to keep it protected all winter long? We’ve got your answer:
Step 1: Find the AC circuit
A plastic or metal lid usually covers it. Open the lid and switch the AC off when the time is right – meaning you know you don’t need your AC any longer.
Step 2: Wash it
Wash your AC unit with a hose to remove dirt, debris, bird droppings, and anything else that can stain it. Make a note to remove the leaves once fall rolls around to keep them from getting caught.
Step 3: Cover the unit
You’ll need to cover your AC unit to protect it from all that can damage it in the cold, freezing temperatures. Choose a cover that is waterproof. Some manufacturers make covers that are designed just for AC units, but you can use any plastic or vinyl covering that fits over the unit.
Step 4: Wrap it up
Wrap up your unit in vinyl ropes or bungee cords to keep your cover secure. Make sure the cover is wrapped tightly so it doesn’t blow away in strong windy conditions.
